More green gadgets
Continuing with the theme of gadgets that help you live more sustainably, here are some more ideas for consideration.
The efergy energy saving meter is a wireless electricity meter that tracks your energy use so that you know exactly how much you are consuming at any given time, what it is costing you and an estimate of your personal contribution to climate change. The data is stored so that you can track the trends and changes in energy consumption in your household. Easily installed by complete novices. Costs around £45.
You can save about £50 a year by using an EcoButton on your PC or laptop. When you press the EcoButton you put your machine into eco-mode to save energy until you come back to it and press the button again to reactivate it where you left off. Expect to pay around £15 per button.

The Bye Bye Standby energy saving kit works by totally cutting power to the devices plugged into it when they’re not in use, saving power that devices would have consumed on standby. You get one remote control and three sockets for £34.99 and one remote and two sockets for £19.99.

Epson printers get EST seal of approval
The Energy Saving Trust (www.energysavingtrust.org.uk) have granted Epson the first ever energy saving recommendation label awarded to a printer, so if you’re in the market for a printer, have a look at what they have on offer.
And here’s another way to go eco-friendly with your printer… return your printer cartridges to be refilled, or buy recycled printer cartridges. Don’t forget to recycle the ones that you’ve used up.

Make it a packed lunch

Do you buy lunch every day? Is it a sandwich that comes in one of those throw-away triangular plastic containers, or a salad in a disposable plastic bowl? You could save money and reduce waste by taking your own lunch to work. Here are some ideas for waste-free lunches.
1. Pack a sandwich in a sandwich box that can be washed and reused.
2. Make a salad and pack it in a reusable food container along with a kitchen fork that can be taken home to wash again.
3. Take soup or a hot drink in a flask instead of buying in disposable containers.
4. Get yourself a drink bottle to take juice or water to work, and fill up with water from the tap.

Rechargeable batteries are 32x better for the environment
An independent report showing the impact that batteries have on the environment has recently been released by rechargeable battery manufacturer Uniross, with a special focus on the differences between disposable and rechargeable batteries. The report concludes that rechargeable batteries have up to 32 times less impact on the environment than disposable batteries. That’s a huge difference!
Now’s the time to stop buying disposable batteries, there really is no good excuse not to. Buy rechargeables (don’t forget you’ll need a battery charger too), help the planet, and save some money too. They may be a little more expensive in the short term, but the long term savings are considerable.
Handy battery disposal tip: When disposing of what remain of your disposable batteries, you may like to know that Curry’s stores have a battery recycling point where you can drop your old batteries off. If you throw your old batteries out with your household rubbish you will be adding to chemical contamination of landfill sites.

Say goodbye to standby
Electronics companies weren’t thinking about saving energy when they invented standby. Fortunately there’s a general consensus on what a bad idea it was, and some electronics manufacturers are addressing the problem. But there are a lot of televisions, DVD-players and VCRs still out there haemorrhaging electricity while they’re left on standby. I make every effort to switch of my TV, DVD and video player, but there are times when something gets left on because the children forget or because I’m in a mad rush to leave the house and don’t go around checking everything. It would be a whole lot easier to be sure I’d switched it all off if I just had to press one button and all those appliances were switched off at once. And now that’s possible. Hooray! Bye Bye Standby makes it easy to switch off everything at the touch of a button. Check out this video to get the gist of how it works:
