Valentine’s gift idea: I Am Not A Paper Cup

i-am-not-a-paper-cup.jpgIf your honey works 9 to 5 there’s also the likelihood that he goes past the coffee shop on the way to work.  Show him how much you care by making it easier for him to live greener and preserve the planet for future generations to enjoy.  I Am Not A Paper Cup will give your man the convenience of one of those take-away coffee cups with the plastic slurp-hole lid, only it is a reusable cup and using it will save trees and prevent the waste created by everyone having a paper cup every morning.

I Am Not A Paper Cup is crafted in double-walled porcelain with a flexible silicone lid, and is tipped to be “perfect for coffee fans who want to replicate that Noo Yawk-style rushing-to-work/slurping-on-a-latte vibe without leaving home”.  From Firebox,   £12.95

Valentine’s gift idea: Burt’s Bees Classic Tin Quartet

burts-bees-gift-set.jpgI’m a dedicated fan of Burt’s Bees little tins of goodness, so I think that this Burt’s Bees Classic Tin Quartet would make a great gift for both men and women this Valentine’s Day.  The set comes with Beeswax Lip Balm, Res-Q Ointment, Hand Salve and Lemon Butter Cuticle Crème.  All Burt’s Bees products are made with the environment in mind, and of the purest natural products.

Beeswax Lip Balm:  A really great lip balm for sealing in moisture.  I use this through the winter for super-soft lips, it really works.  Apparently, it’s Burt’s Bees most popular product.

Res-Q Ointment: Nature’s healing power in a little tin. I haven’t tried this product yet, some say this heals stings and scratches overnight.  Wow!

Hand Salve:  This isn’t called “salvation for hands” for nothing.

Lemon Butter Cuticle Crème:  Avoid the dreaded cuticle picking by keeping them soft and conditioned.

The set of 4 classic Burt’s Bees tins is £10.99, totally worth it.

Valentine’s gift idea: Freeloader solar charger

freeloader.jpgIs your man the rugged outdoors type whose idea of a perfect holiday is trekking up Kilimanjaro before the snow at the top is gone for good, or volunteering on the Galapagos Islands?  This will be the perfect gift for him.  The Freeloader solar charger makes it possible to recharge handheld devices while away from home.  That includes phones, iPods, sat navs and handheld gaming consoles.

The Freeloader gets its power from fold out solar panels, but it can also be charged via USB for when that is more appropriate.  The internal battery can power an iPod for up to 18hours, a mobile phone for 44 hours or a PSP for 2.5 hours. This gadget is impact resistant and made from lightweight aluminium.  It can top up its own battery in as little as 5 hours, and hold that battery charge for up to 3 months. It comes with a range of adaptors to fit the device you want to power. £24.93 including postage.

Green Christmas gift idea: the gorillapod

gorillapod.jpgHere’s a cool gift for the shutterbug or world traveller.  The gorillapod fastens to just about anything, meaning you can take your camera anywhere at all and still get that perfect shot, without having to find a level surface to place your tripod on. Each gorillapod is made up of 30 or more fully articulating ball-and-socket joints that can be bent and twisted into any shape to keep your camera steady! Soft rings and rubberized feet prevent the gorillapod from slipping.

While the gorillapod is not essentially an eco-friendly product, Joby who make the gorillapod  belong to 1% for the planet,  it’s a really handy product and will probably last till the icecaps freeze over again.

Green Christmas gift idea: organic towels

organic-towels.jpgNice towels are something that people just don’t tend to spend much money on for themselves, but lovely organic towels make a fabulously luxurious gift. They would be the perfect gift for a parent, aunt, or a young person starting out on their own.

These lovely towels from Natural Collection are made from 100% organic and Fairtrade cotton.   The cotton comes from the Chetna Cotton Project in central India. This project is run by a group of farmers from the region who work together to produce cotton which is organically grown.

The towels are available in the following colours:  Pebble, Dusky Rose, Bark, Parchment and Moss (from top to bottom in the picture).

Cosy toes for the boys

cosy-house-shoes.jpgThese aren’t just slippers, these are wool and organic cotton house shoes from Simple shoes.  What does that mean?  It means that they’re going to keep your feet warm and comfy through the autumn and winter months.  But that’s not all.  They look pretty good, and they’re sustainable.

Simple shoes has put a lot of effort into finding the right materials to make these slippers ethical, long lasting and as natural as possible.

First there’s the wool, we all know where that comes from (baah!).

Then the cotton, it’s organic, produced without herbicides and pesticides.  Using organic cotton also supports the organic farming community who are doing great things to protect the earth.

And down to the sole.  If you forget you’re wearing slippers (because they’re so comfortable it’s quite possible that you might) and venture out with the dog, or to the local shop, don’t worry.  The mix of crepe rubber and latex (also a type of rubber) will keep your feet dry and your house shoes will live to lounge another day.

To top it all off, they come in a 100% recycled cardboard box.

You don’t often find comfort as green as that. Now, where’s that pipe?
