Torchwood - Children of Earth
This new series of Torchwood (Series 3) was shown on BBC One a couple of weeks ago over five nights. The whole of Series three was just five episodes, but boy they were good episodes. In fact, it was probably the best series of Torchwood that I have seen.
I’ve been a big fan of Doctor Who for many, many years and this more adult orientated spin-off from that program complements it perfectly. Torchwood - Children of Earth is now available to own on DVD and Blu-Ray. The version I’m writing about here is the Blu-Ray version. I chose the Blu_Ray version because it’s packed with some great extra features. Things that you wouldn’t get on the DVD version and of course, its all in High Definition.
What I like about getting this on Blu-Ray is the ability to watch it all in one sitting without having to take a break in between the episodes. This helps with keeping the pace of the story going. I found that when I watched Torchwood - Children of Earth on the television that the momentum of the series changed on a daily basis. I’m not saying I didn’t like that, but I would have prefered to watch it all through in one go.
There are definitely some great twists and shocking developments in this third series. I’m not going to reveal any of them here for obvious reasons; you’ll just have to buy your own copy of the series. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
Obviously if you don’t have a Blu-Ray player, you can still get Torchwood - Children of Earth on DVD.

Sony Blu-Ray
I think that this will be my next big purchase now that I have a TV capable of displaying a high definition picture. Blu Ray is undoubtedly the next format that we will all have to convert to, although I can see DVD staying around for a long while yet.
I think that getting the Sony Blu Ray player will be a joy to use and obviously, watching films on it will be totally amazing. I am worried that if I get the Sony Blu Ray player that I’ll want a bigger television though. I doubt that it will happen any time soon though. When I move to live to Bolton, I’ll be living in a smallish room and the 22″ television I have now seems to be the ideal size.
The Sony Blu Ray player has a load of exciting features that come with it:
- 7.1 Channel HD audio bit stream out via HDMI
- 24p True Cinema
- BD-Live ready:BRAVIA Sync
- XrossMediaBar
Not only that, but the Sony Blu Ray Player comes with a wealth of connections:
- 1 x audio line-out
- 1 x component video output
- 1 x composite video output
- 1 x SPDIF output
- 1 x S-Video output
- 1 x Ethernet
- 1 x HDMI output
You have to admit that these are pretty darn good. Obviously the Sony Blu Ray player plays Blu Ray discs, but in addition to this it will play CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD and CD.
Sony seems to be at the forefront of exciting new developments when it comes to things like this and I’m extremely grateful to them. They changed the face of gaming for the better so let us hope that Blu Ray takes off as it should do.

Gadget review 2008
As 2008 draws to a close I’m going to take time out to look back at some of the best gadgets that the year had to give us. Without a doubt it was the year of the iPhone. The Smartphone from Apple was the most talked about device in 2008. I wonder what Apple have in store for us in 2009? We’ll find out soon enough because Macworld is just around the corner (I expect updates to the Mac Mini and the iMac range). There were other great gadgets in 2008 too, so let us take a look back.
Apple iPhone.
The must have gadget that had everyone talking. Apple introduced touch screen technology to the masses with the innovative iPhone. With it came the mobile iTunes and App stores. Access to thousands of albums and applications were a finger tap away. No doubt Apple has changed people’s expectations of what a mobile device should be.
Twitter
Not a gadget, but a micro-blogging and social networking website. Twitter really took off in 2008 allowing people to blog about what they were doing in 140 characters. Why 140? It’s to do with the amount of character that can fit in a single SMS message. It’s even got the starts twittering. Look out for Stephen Fry, Robert Llewelyn and John Cleese.
Netbooks.
Maybe one of the more surprising gadgets of 2008 were the netbooks that appeared. Sure they were around at the back end of 2007, but these nifty portable and small computers could be carried anywhere without much bother. Their ultra cheap price made sure that they would be popular with people wanting internet access wherever they were.
Blu-Ray.
The battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray finally came to an end with Blu-Ray becoming the champion. But will it be a success? There are already services that allow us to download high definition movies straight to our computers bypassing the need for a disc all together. Is it too late for Blu-Ray to even get off the ground?
There were many innovations during 2008 and I look forward to seeing what the big technology companies have to offer us in 2009. Thinner LCD TV’s will be big I think as well as the Nokia N97 (A possible rival to both the iPhone and G1).
My favourite gadget of 2008 has to be the iPod touch that I got. It’s been absolutely everywhere with me. A truly great gadget. I have nothing more to say to you this year. We’ll start the year off with a look at some exciting upcoming gadgets. Until then, I wish you all a Happy New Year!

High Def Movie Goodness
So I know the summer is almost upon us and we should be thinking about things to do outside, but given the track record of the UK weather over the past couple of years it may be a good idea to stock up on some movies to pass the time as you wait for the showers to clear. In the past few weeks there have been some fantastic releases, and if you didn’t get a chance to catch them at the cinema first time around, then you may want to consider picking them up on Bluray disk.
First of how about I am Legend. The tale of one mans fight for survival in a deserted New York. Will Smith plays the part of a sole survivor in this famous American city after a plague has wiped out most of man-kind leaving any survivors as blood thirsty zombies. Unlike some of the Zombie films of the past these guys can get around at top speeds which makes for some great action sequences. Personally I think these were some of the best zombie special effects to date and I for one can’t wait to see them in High Def.
I can also highly recommend Enchanted, which in my opinion is another winner from Disney which will be a sure fire hit for kids of all ages. I actually watched this on a flight during my recent trip and even though it was on a small screen with terrible audio I highly enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see it again, this time with the Bluray treatment.
Finally another disk I can’t wait to get my hands on is 3:10 to Yuma, a gritty story of a small-time rancher who desperate for money agrees to hold a captured outlaw who’s awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. If you are even the slightest bit interested in Westerns then you will want to pick this one up - it’s fantastic.

PS3 Coming Of Age
It seems as though Sony are finally starting to get their act together in regards to the Playstation 3. First and foremost, and in my opinion this is and always will be the most important factor in the console wars, the games are starting to live up to the hype. In the past week we had Gran Turismo 5 Prologue drop and believe me although this is just a taster to what’s to come with the full game it still shows off the kind of power the PS3 can deliver. Oh and just quickly while we are on the subject of GT5 Prologue if you do plan to pick this up, and I recommend you do, then you should also consider one of the many supported force feedback steering wheels. The amount of realism I’m getting by combining the two is frightening and after a long race I’m actually tired, both physically and mentally - awesome ! As well as the cross platform games the PS3 can also expect exclusive titles such as Haze, which I managed to play at last years Games Convention in Germany - again another stellar title.
On top of this Sony are also working hard at making the PS3 live up to its promise of the central hub of entertainment in a home. Just last week the latest firmware was delivered which brought additional features to the movie playback options, including Blue-ray Live, which allows for interactive access to web content. This actually made the PS3 the first to market device to support these features. Of course we now need to wait until some discs are available that support this. Sony have also continued to build up the relationship between the PS3 and the PSP, with many features, such as remote play, already available. In the coming weeks it is rumoured that the next firmware update will support the ability to copy Blue-ray content down to the PSP to view on the move - very cool !
In the coming weeks it looks like Sony are also looking at the user interface with the announcement dropping last night that the next firmware update, expected mid-April, to bring a major overhaul to the Playstation Store. It will no longer use the web browser, and promises a much faster and rich experience for the end user. On top of this we also have the promise of Playstation Home, Sonys supposed updated online experience. Personally I’m not too excited about Home, especially since the initial beta responses were so poor, and since then it seems to have gone under cover. Then again I wouldn’t put it past Sony to deliver something quite special and continue to make 2008 the year of the PS3.

Toshiba Reveal HD-DVD Losses
Glum Toshiba accountants have today revealed the true cost of the Japanese company’s stubbornness in their battle against Sony’s Blu-Ray with losses counting up to £330 million. Although £330 million is by no means small change it is less than what was predicted by some financial big-guns who predicted Toshiba would lose around half a billion after their struggle against Blu-Ray.
You would think that Toshiba couldn’t possibly receive any more bad news but the company just can’t seem to catch a break at the moment. A whole host of US retailers including Circuit City and Best Buy are offering consumers holding gift cards for HD-DVD tech the chance to swap them in exchange for something a bit more useful. It seems Toshiba can’t even get rid of the stuff they have lying around, i suggest lobbing them into a tire fire or putting them into storage until the 5th November so we can save some tree’s and have a more new age Guy Fawkes night.
Whether UK retailers will show as much generosity as the Yanks remains to be seen but i wouldn’t count your chickens, i suggest you focus on going Blu and grab yourself a Blu-Ray player as soon as.
