British Style Genius

As I write this post, I am sat in front of the TV on one of my rare evenings of TV viewing. My only night of watching TV this week had to be Tuesday because, I just had to watch the much advertised British Style Genius on BB2.

The programme was an interesting watch for any fashionista and it gave me a real sense of patriotism to hear all about the fashion democracy that we have in Britain. Well of course, I always knew that we had something different in Britain in terms of fashion innovation. You only have to read Susie Bubbles posts at Paris fashion week to realise that the French don’t have the same sense of experimentation when it comes to style. One of the most interesting parts of the programme for me was seeing the input that Kate Moss had into the ‘Kate Moss’ Collection for Topshop. Of course it could all be fake for the cameras but I have always wondered how much involvement there is in the celebrity/ designer high street collaborations.

I also found it really interesting to hear how British fashion has evolved including historical labels like Biba and Ossie Clark, the influence of vintage clothing and the role of one of my favourites, M & S. As Topshop goes to New York, I will be really interested to see how the very British style sold by this iconic high street shop will sell in the US. Will they have to adapt the whole concept for America?

There are in total 5 programmes over 5 weeks, I can’t wait until next Tuesday.
