The Hussein Chalayan Exhibition

There will be an exhibition of the designs of Hussein Chalayan in association with Creative Puma. Hussein Chalayan is the creative director of Puma and has twice been named as the British designer of the year. He is recognised for his use of technology and innovative fashion designs. He is one of the most forward thinking British designers and challenges the perception that clothing is purely functional garments. His designs have been inspired by all sorts of themes including cultural identity, displacement and migration. His work also crosses boundaries between architecture, design, philosophy, anthropology, science and technology. The exhibition will include ‘wearable, portable architecture’ in which furniture literally transforms itself into garments.

The exhibition will be held at the Design Museum until 17th May 2009. If you don’t get the opportunity to go along, you can always enjoy looking at some amazing designs by other British Designers. I love this Anenome wrap dress by Sara Berman.

Hussein Chalayan - drippy clothes

This post is not as you might think about the latest in geek chic. ‘Drippy clothes’ is the best way that I could think of to describe the avant garde creations of Hussein  Chalayan showcased in his spring summer 2009 show. The latex moulded body suits and dresses appeared to literally drip from the models bodies. As if they had  been laid down or moving very fast whilst wear a fluid outfit. Hussein Chalayan who is  known for his cutitng edge designs and innovation as well as his art, produced a stunning collection which, whilst not something that many would wear was definitely inspirational and very visually pleasing.

The collection also featured some great designs handpainted onto the dresses and inspired by crushed cars. Something about the speed of our lives and how it can only end in a crash. That is far too philosphical for me and I would much rather enjoy looking at the fashion rather than thinking about it too much.

For a much more wearable but very stylish variation on the fluidity theme pioneered by Hussein Chalayan, try wearing beautifully fluid materials like silk. I love this black silk flower jaquard dress.

Harem Pants

This season one of the many styles of trousers that is popping up all over the place is  the Harem style. This is the sort of trousers that are loose and and tigher round the ankle. The thing about these trousers that seems to scare everyone off is the dropped crotch. But actually they are amazingly flattering, if something of an aquired taste. Yes they are some what reminiscent of MC Hammer but then whats so wrong with Hammer?

I think Harem pants are going to just be one of those things that you either love or you hate. I have loved them for the summer with sandals and they are great holiday wear but I am sort of struggling to think whether will move into my Autumn and Winter wardrobe with ease.

If you love harem pants, then this bright and colourful pair by Hussein Chalayan will be perfect.

Designer Sports Wear

I don’t usually give too much thought to sports wear. I’m not a very sporty sort of person and I don’t really care much for sports wear in a non sport situation. I like my clothes to be both comfy and practical but looking smart and presentable is also very important to me. I was however quite interested to hear the announcement that Hussein Chalayan has been appointed creative director for the sport life style label Puma. Chalayan graduated from Central Saint Martins School of Art with an honors degree in fashion. He has been named “British Designer of the Year” twice for his innovative collections and performance-based fashion productions. He is known for the fusion of art and fashion that he brings to his designs.

Puma collaborating with a top designer is not a first, Puma has also worked with Alexander McQueen and adidas by Stella McCartney is a very popular designer sports wear range. Even more recently, I have seen another designer sports wear collaboration between Gola sports shoes and Jonathan Saunders. If sportswear can really look this stylish, then perhaps I will have to take up some sport.

Here is some more really stylish designer sports wear:-
