Balenciaga - Back to Black

For Spring Summer 08, Nicholas Ghesquiere show cased a spectacular and colourful collection that explore new references for Balenciaga and I think he really pulled it off. In stark comparison, the Balenciaga Fall 2008 ready to wear collection was altogether a more sombre affair with assorted black dresses and a palette of greys. The collection remained true to Ghesquieres couture techniques and finishes and carried on the theme from last season of volume and structure. There was almost a touch of sci fi in the collection and it is clear this must have been part of his inspiration. Again ground breaking stuff for Balenciaga but once more I think he has pulled it off. The beauty of the collection is the way that he combines the history and heritage of Balenciaga with his own ideas and manages to keep the whole look so stylish and sleek. The jewellery, a combination of archive copies and new designs, in sparkling crystal, gems and pearls was the finishing touch .My favourites from the collection are the classic black cocktail dresses with a hint of Spanish chic and the asymmetrical draped tops.
