Steven Spielberg presents Boom Blox

boom-blox-packshot.jpg
Steven Spielberg has been credited in dozens of games, and has inspired some of the classiest adventures ever and even the atrocious E.T. cartridge for the Atari 2600, but hasn’t been very keen in getting his hands dirty in game design. Not frequently at least, as the last (or was it the first? hmmm, possibly the only) game with a direct Steven Spielberg involvement was Lucasarts’ excellent The Dig and that was over 10 years ago. Actually, make that 15 years ago, depressing as the number sounds, and remember it was a deep sci-fi epic heavy on story, as one would expect from Mr. Spielberg.

Boom Blox for the Nintendo Wii, on the other hand, doesn’t seem like standard Spielberg territory. Not by far. It’s a cutesy, shiny puzzle game mainly aimed at kids instead, that will apparently sport some pretty impressive graphics, 300 levels, WiiConnect 24 support and some pretty innovative gameplay. Spielberg got inspired while playing with his Wii, you see. Shockingly, the thing should be available in a few days too!

Oh, and below I’ve taken the liberty and posted some lovely screenshots EA has released to intrigue us, and, in case you were wondering what this huge pic at the beginning of the post is, well, it’s a PAL packshot.

I really don’t know what to make of this game, and my kids definitely don’t. I suspect it will compete with Blast Works, both of which have a distinctive style and allow players to create and share levels. And both release on the same day in the U.S.

I think the appeal of knocking things over in a highly explosive manner can’t be overstated. The game videos so far indicate an impressive use of the Havok physics engine.

I, on the other hand, simply know what to make of the thing… Buy it when it reaches budget prices and put it next to “The Dig” where it will be called names and cruelly ridiculed. hah!

How did you know I still haven’t played The Dig?

  4. konstantinos Says:

Well, truth be said, I didn’t, though I have to admit most people seem to have skipped this game… For shame really, as it’s quite the gem…

Actually, I’ve wanted to play ut when it came out, I was very busy with stuff, and it was supposedly 60+ hours.

FWIW, the more I see of Boom Blox, the more fun the game looks. I’ll probably pick it up when I get back home. (I’m off in training land in California.)

60 hours is a gross overestimate really. Now, I’m not sure I can be truly exact as it’s been quite a long time since I played the Dig and I did use a walkthrough a couple of times, but i don’t believe it was over 10-15 hours. Tops. And it was brilliant!

Oh, and do let us know about Boom Blox…
